For over a decade, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office has been committed to the philosophy of "Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving." Community Oriented Policing is a philosophy, management style, and organizational strategy that promotes proactive problem-solving and community partnerships. This policing concept is based on the ideal that crime is not just a law enforcement problem, it is a community problem.Although the entire department is committed to community policing, the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving Unit (COPPS) is the flagship of the department's efforts. The COPPS unit is comprised of 1 sergeant, 5 deputies, and 1 community services officer. In addition, the COPPS unit utilizes the help of several Volunteers-In-Policing to accomplish the goals of the unit and provide a level of service that exceeds the expectations of the community we serve.
Due to their expertise in community policing, the COPPS unit handles a variety of assignments within the Sheriff's Department. Employing a variety of COP strategies and citizen involvement, COPPS deputies address large-scale community problems such as transient camps, prostitution, animal fighting, and street level drug dealing, along with alcohol and tobacco violations by minors. Additionally, they provide a multi-dimensional School Safety Program to all the elementary schools within the county jurisdiction and manage the Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Program, which abates nearly one thousand abandoned and junk cars per year from the county roadways, as well as public and private property.
By working together, we can decrease crime, public nuisances, and improve the quality of life in Sonoma County. The role of the police in this process is one of leadership, guidance, assistance, and as the enforcement arm of this community partnership.
